1998 - THOMAS HART BENTON (1934)

Janet Hessling was part of a team of conservators organized by Martin Radecki of the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Margaret Contompasis of the Indiana University Art Gallery to treat Thomas Hart Benton's 1934 mural cycle The History of Indiana at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Benton created the 12' x 18' murals for the Indiana Pavilion at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago. They were installed in the lobby of Memorial Auditorium on the University campus in 1940. A team of 25 conservators worked over a period of seven months to consolidate, clean, inpaint, and varnish the murals to restore the bright colors that had been obscured by years of dirt and discolored varnish.
