1999-BAYARD WOOTTEN

Cleaning the painting required close work.

Janet Hessling treated early 20th-century North Carolina photographer Bayard Wootten's photomural of Cupola House, Edenton, North Carolina for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wootten's super-enlarged photograph on paper had been hand-tinted in oil paint by Hope S. Chamberlain, creating an unusual combination of materials.

Consolidating the paper support, which is mounted directly to the wall, and cleaning areas of exposed photo emulsion were particular challenges. After treatment, the work was protected with a cover of ultraviolet-filtering Plexiglas, a vital step in the continued preservation of this mural since sprinkler heads of a new fire-suppression system had been installed near by.
