1999-BAYARD WOOTTEN |

![]() Cleaning the painting required close work. |
Janet Hessling treated early 20th-century North Carolina photographer Bayard Wootten's photomural of Cupola House, Edenton, North Carolina for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wootten's super-enlarged photograph on paper had been hand-tinted in oil paint by Hope S. Chamberlain, creating an unusual combination of materials. |

Consolidating the paper support, which is mounted directly to the wall, and cleaning areas of exposed photo emulsion were particular challenges. After treatment, the work was protected with a cover of ultraviolet-filtering Plexiglas, a vital step in the continued preservation of this mural since sprinkler heads of a new fire-suppression system had been installed near by. |
