2005 - PLAZA THEATER, EL PASO

Jan Hessling worked with Evergreene Painting Studios to clean the large mural in the Patio Room of the Plaza Theater. The mural cleaning was a sister project of a much larger decorative painting project that Evergreene had undertaken at the theater. After examining the condition of the mural, Hessling did tests to determine the safest way to remove the heavy layers of grime and overpaint that obscured the trompe l'oeil landscape.

The mural is a fantasy view of a southwestern city intended to blend with the dark blue ceiling to fool the eye and create an illusion of being outdoors.

The top of the mural was covered with dark overpaint.

Removal of the overpaint revealed the original brighter blue color of the sky.
