Janet Hessling worked with fellow conservator Michael Ruzga of Cincinnati to remove a group of 19th century paintings from St. Michael's Catholic Catholic in Cincinnati. The craftsmanship of both the artists and the decorators who mounted the canvases to the wall made the conservators' job easier.

Ruzga and Hessling designed and constructed a unique support to help them safely handle the two large paintings on the ceiling. The paintings were rolled on the small tube as they were detached from the plaster support. After they were completely detached, they were transferred onto the large tube for storage. |

![]() Paintings included a version of the Last Supper (above) as well as St Michael Defeating Satan, images of several saints, and two angels. |
![]() Under the ceiling murals, the conservators discovered traces of an earlier decorative scheme painted directly on the plaster, an elaborate design of faux stone arches interspersed with stars. |
